Pre-Naming Babies.
Yesterday, my roommate and I got on the topic of names that we liked. That conversation turned into names that we would like for future children. We're only 20 & 21, yet we still have little note documents in our phones dedicated to names for babies we may have years from now. When I opened up my list, I think Chris was a little surprised. "I had no idea that either of you had a list like this." Then he eyed me up as if he was saying 'especially you."
I felt kind of freakish for even starting a list, like maybe I'd be jinxing myself or something. I also know that there is a "CREEP" sticker that gets slapped on girls who start planning their weddings before they even get engaged. But at least we're not picking nursery colors? Buying outfits?
To feel less alone, I asked my Tumblr followers if they also kept track of names they loved. Only five people responded, but the general response was that yes they kept track, and not just girls. One of them was one of my best GUY friends. Even women who weren't crazy about ever having children in the future had a stockpile of names somewhere. One of my roommates co-workers also confessed that she, too, had a list on her phone of names she likes. After we talked about this for a little while, even Chris admitted that there are some names that he likes a lot and keeps track of in his head (*swoon*)
I'm not sure what the deal with this is. Maybe it's something like getting a tattoo. You should think about it for at least a year before you put something on your body forever. Maybe we feel like we need to REALLY think about baby names before we give it to a kid for their whole life. Or perhaps all of us (female AND male) have a little maternal instinct inside of us that is just excited to have babies and this is the lowest form of planning.
As for me, I just have a horrible memory ;)
Do you have a list of names? What are some of your favorite names for your future kids? If you have kids, how did you EVER decide on a name?

such a cute post!!! a year before we got pregnant when i had chosen our baby girl's name, i would be at work doodling it. And now she'll be here so soon!
ReplyDeleteFelix Maxham. I love the two "x"s in her name. When I first told people her name, some of them would immediately ask, "well what does your husband think?" -- in other words they were telling me they didn't like it (his sister actually said the latter). I know it's not a typical girl's name (or a popular name for even a boy) but that is why i love it all the more. She'll be named after my mom's dad and it means "happy" in latin which is what she is for me. My happiness. What i've prayed for for awhile.
Other names i loved : Stella (but that's our dog's name), Lola (my husband completely crossed this off because that's the name of a dog i had once upon a time shared with an ex), Ever (a blog friend's baby girl), and Harper is a popular one.
I also love the name Kinsler for a girl. I'm a huge TX Rangers fan and there's a player with that name and i saw a fan had named her girl that and i thought it was cute and different. You could call her Kinsey for short. Cup of Jo wrote a post not too long ago and had the name "theodora" on it and the parents called her "Teddy" for short. i love that! Eloise is pretty too.
Boy names are harder for me... I have always loved the name Harrison, Henry, Oliver, Carey, and yes! Holden. My husband was not a fan of that one though :)
ugh, thanks for letting me ramble on here Courtney! ha
My summer after third grade my best friend and I wrote these 20 page books about our future lives. They were written in mostly list form. I am SO GLAD I kept it because nothing makes me laugh harder than looking through them. (I was going to have a basketball scholarship to UCLA, go to vet school and be married to a football player who became a doctor, and yes, I even had our future children named) I was a weird kid.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I totally have a current mental list of kid names. Most of them have grown to be more family related as I've gotten older. I'm a sucker for grandmother grandfather names, therefore my future baby will either be Florence or Leo. :)
I did this too when I was younger, so no need to worry! It's just a bit of harmless girly fun, i reckon.
ReplyDeletePS: I'm hosting a Sedwick Studio giveaway on my blog, hope you enter: http://www.underlockandkeyblog.com/2012/08/sedwick-studio-giveaway.html

I'm 20 and I also have a bunch of names in my mind, but my two favourites are Emma and Oliver so far. :)
